4b/52 High Search Intent: The Ultimate Key to Attracting Customers
30 January 202552 strategies for business growth. This is the fourth article about what business owners can do to grow their businesses this year.
Key Concept: Paid advertising gives you greater control over who sees your content and when. It challenges you to think more about who your customer is and how to get their attention. You are paying for it, so why wouldn’t you?

Question: Why Spend Money on Paid Media?
Paid advertising is a marketing tool to gain leads. The challenge is having the right content aimed at the right potential customer. I wrote about creating targeted content for a targeted demographic market in 3/52 Develop a Winning Content Marketing Strategy here.
1 Social Media Advertising
- Why: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok offer affordable, advanced/highly targeted options. These allow you to reach your ideal audience based on demographics, location, interests, and behaviour, making them particularly effective for small businesses [1][6].
- Best for: Businesses targeting consumers (B2C), especially in retail, food, beauty, or lifestyle sectors.
- Key Benefits:
- Cost-effective with small budgets. Facebook ads can generate an average ROI between 50%-400% [4].
- Highly measurable performance metrics.
- Enables visual storytelling and interaction with followers.
- Example: A plumber might run Instagram ads showcasing bathroom installation jobs recently completed with a call to action (CTA) of Contact Us HERE (with an embedded link to the Contact page of their website).
2 Google Ads/PPC
- Why: Google Ads allows you to target users who are actively searching for products or services like yours precisely.
- Best for: Local service providers, e-commerce, or businesses in competitive industries where search intent is high (informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional).
- Key Benefits:
- High intent leads from search queries (e.g., “plumber near me”).
- Flexible budget options.
- Pay-per-click (PPC) model ensures you only pay when someone clicks.
- Example: A handyman service might run local Google Search Ads targeting “emergency fence repairs” to attract ready-to-buy customers.
- Businesses make an average of $2 in revenue for every $1 spent on Google Ads [1][8].
3 Email marketing
- Why: Email marketing remains one of the highest ROI channels in the UK, with a return of £36 to £42 for every £1 spent, according to the Direct Marketing Association.
- Best for: Businesses with an existing or growing customer base or newsletter audience.
- Key Benefits:
- Low cost to get started.
- Build long-term customer relationships as it is a direct line of communication to your audience (customers and market).
- Great for promotions, loyalty programs, or upselling.
- Easily trackable, allowing you to see open rates, click-through rates, and conversions.
- Easy to personalise for better engagement. [5][8]
- Example: A retail shop could send emails about upcoming sales or offer discounts to loyal customers.
4 Local Advertising
- Why: Small businesses can make a significant impact by engaging directly with their local community.
- Best for: Brick-and-mortar stores, restaurants, or service-based businesses targeting a specific location.
- Options Include:
- Local radio or TV ads.
- Sponsorships for community events or local sports teams.
- Flyers, posters, or ads in local newspapers or magazines.
- Key Benefits:
- Builds trust and loyalty with the local audience.
- Drives foot traffic and boosts local reputation.
- Example: A local café might sponsor a radio segment promoting their happy hour specials.
5 Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
While not a paid advertising medium, SEO is crucial for long-term organic growth. It helps improve your website’s visibility in search engine results, driving targeted traffic to your site without ongoing ad spend. SEO, PPC and email marketing are considered among the highest ROI marketing channels [8][9].

In conclusion
If you’re just starting out, focus on one or two channels to avoid spreading your budget too thin. Track your campaigns’ performance using analytics tools (e.g., Facebook Ads Manager, Google Analytics) to fine-tune and maximize ROI over time.
These channels offer a balance of cost-effectiveness, targeting capabilities, and measurable results, making them ideal for small businesses looking to maximize their advertising returns.
